Mayflower Community Chorus
The Mayflower Community
Chorus is the performing ensemble of the Mayflower Choral Society, a nonprofit
organization devoted to supporting the educational and cultural benefits of
musical performance to its members, the Marin community, and general public.
The Chorus operates two seasons during the year—Spring/Summer and
Fall/Christmas— with each season culminating in a professional quality show. No
formal auditions are required to sing with the group, just a desire to learn,
work hard and have a great time performing a diverse mix of traditional,
contemporary and original music.
In addition to seasonal shows, the
Mayflower Community Chorus also provides vocal entertainment in a variety of
musical styles for private, corporate and community events. Small ensembles
and/or the full chorus can be scheduled. Performance fees support the
educational and cultural programs of the Mayflower Choral Society.
Originating in 1977, the Mayflower
Community Chorus began as the offshoot of a small group of singers who enjoyed
caroling in four–part harmony at San Rafael’s popular Mayflower Inne under the
direction of the late Larry Vargo. Larry became the Musical Director and
patriarch of the chorus, shaping and developing its growth over 14 years until
his death in December 1991. Our chorus is currently directed by the talented and
dynamic, Daniel Canosa.
In 1984, Lisa Murphy a chorus
member, developed the idea of a fund raiser for the Mayflower Chorus. She called
it “Harmony Sweepstakes.”The first Sweepstakes was just a local Marin County
acappela contest which has grown into a national and international competition
welcoming participants from as far away as Australia. Since its inception, 20
years ago, members of the Chorus have participated as volunteers in both the
regional and national competitions.
